Muslim Cool Facilitation Questions Ch1 (pages 46-76) Bernardo Villatoro

Why was Khabeers race, ethnicity Gender, and regional identity more important in the field than simply being Muslim and how would her experience be if she was another race or gender?

Post 9/11 really seperated Hip hop and Islam as well as racializing muslim as brown and not black. How would the the relationship between Hip hop and Islam be if the events of 9/11 never occured?

According to Khabeer Muslim Cool is a move towards blackness and a construction of a US based Muslim identity. Why is it important to have a US based Muslim identity?

How do you think Khabeer writing of Muslim Cool would be and turn out if the genre was not Hip Hop and another genre of Music and why is music important for connecting with Islam and being Muslim in the US?

How would Khabeers writing be different if she was Male or a different race? Why is being black essential to find a connection through Hip hop and Islam?

Forgive me, I was having a hard time figuring out how to post on the Blog. But I uploaded my questions on turnitin on Tuesday April 14

  1. 1. I think her race, ethnicity, gender, and regional identity are more important than just being Muslim because it is due to these factors that allow her to connect with the people she is interviewing with more than just a common religion. I imagine her experience/interviews would be less successful if she was another race, but maybe her gender wouldn't matter as much.

    2. If the events of 9/11 didn't occur perhaps we would see a closer relationship between Hip hop and Islam. Perhaps more collaborative efforts and more Islamic imagery and themes would be more present within the music genre. I imagine because of 9/11 Hip hop wanted to distance itself from Islam.

    3. I think its important because it shows that being Muslim isn't a bad thing and that we shouldn't be afraid of people because they are Muslim. By having a US based Muslim Identity, people can relate and connect with those who identify with being a United States Citizen. It also allows Muslims in the US to be proud of who they are and to not be afraid to display their identity in public settings.

    4. I think the book would actually be very different. I think more people connect to Hip hop and it arguably has the largest audience of all the different musical genres. I think music is important to connecting Islam and being Muslim in the US because music is universal. It is found all over the world and its easier to understand the themes and meanings behind music than it is with traditional art where you might not get the artists' intent right away.

    5. I think if Khabeers was a different gender or race, she might've had a harder time in connecting and finding people to interview. I wouldn't say that being black is essential in finding a connection through HIp hop and Islam, but it does help Khabeers out in connecting with others that are similar to her.
